What Customers Say About Elgato Turbo.264 - Video H.264 (MP4) Encoder Hardware 10020500:

This poduct is gabage perid. the video quality is worse than an mpeg-4 video, elgato has no shame putting out this poor of a product.I for one will never buy another elgato product.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. files generated have horribly out of sync audio and El Gato has no fix for it. Do your own research and you will find out that this product does not work as advertised.

(It converts the closed captioning, not the subtitles. The quality is good. I got it when I had my iMac G5 and it really made conversion faster. It will see all the episodes as one long movie.

It does a good job. I have been using my Turbo.264 for about a year. The captioning is like what you get when you turn on captions via your TV. So for these DVDs, I cannot use Turbo.264. I have not experienced any of the quality problems other users have encountered.

The subtitles are the foreign languages included on the DVD that you access via the special features on the DVD).However, one BIG FLAW of this device (or more accurately, the software) is that it OFTEN will not see the various episodes on a DVD containing multiple episodes (like a TV series). I don't understand why this is happening, because DVD players and other DVD software can see the episodes fine. Now that I have an Duo Core iMac, I don't really *need* this, because conversion seems to be just as fast on without this device, however it offloads the processing from my Mac and provides some additional features.I use this for converting video to use on my AppleTV and iPhone. Instead of seeing 5 30-minute episodes, it will see one 2.5-hour movie. I am converting to 720x480, 29fps, ~1500 bitrate (so the same file plays on both my AppleTV and iPhone).

One of the benefits the Turbo.264 provides is that it will convert the closed captioning to a format that AppleTV can use. This seems like a very basic flaw. It is only the Turbo software that can't see them.

Potential buyers are advised to check out the numerous reviews and especially the end-user support forum at Elgato's web site that report poor quality, fuzzy video produced by this device. If you want quick encoding, you will get it -- but at a steep loss in quality. That's a shame for an encoding device at the price Elgato asks for the Turbo.264 and the Turbo.264HD. Handbrake produces much higher quality video and while it is slower, it is also free.Elgato needs to make some serious improvements in video quality.

I bought this for my 2.8Ghz iMAC, and found no appreciable difference between iMovie and Quicktime behavior. So for me, it is not worth the money.I am not using the Elgato proprietary software, and cannot speak to how well that will work. Also, I would not be surprised to find out that a less powerful machine might be bettered using this device, so it may have a fit somewhere, just not with me.
